How to Make Sofa Cushions For Your PUP Camper
I choose to redo my pop-up campers’ cushions purely out of esthetics and durability. I had 90’s looking fabric that was in good shape but when it got wet it took an extreme amount of time to dry. Not good when someone needs to sleep on it. I knew I wanted something that would match the décor I was going for but had to withstand the dog and youngsters. I decided to look at the fabric that would be easy to clean and when I started to price them out, I was running well over my budget. Therefore, I had to think outside the box, and I’m so glad I did because they turned out great.
Before and After
Now let me tell you first I love sewing. I will be the first to tell you I’m not the best sewer and I am so critical of myself and my projects. As a result, I choose the easiest method for me and my time restraints. Of course, I put a time limit to get them finished, because I could be doing 5 tasks all at once, and not one will get completed on time. So, I made sure I focused on finishing all the cushions before I started another project. YES!!! Yes, it was boring at times and yes, I cried because my box corner cuts didn’t look right on two cushions, but when it’s laying down no one could see them. Just my dirty little secret, I guess.
I used Youtube to learn how to make box corners easily. Here is one Youtube video I used to create my professional-looking slipcovers. (1) How to Sew Boxed Corners – Bing video
I will post a video on Youtube on how I made my slipcovers.
The Fabric
First thing you might ask where did you get it from? Well, it didn’t come from a craft store like Hobby Lobby or even a fabric store but from Big Lots. Big Lots, you say?!?!?!? You ask me, what materials I could get a Big Lots? Well, I got curtains. Yes, I opted to buy black-out curtains for this project. Extra bonus, they were cut to the sizes I needed. Little cutting necessary for this project was needed.
Let me tell you about the kind of fabric I decided on when determining the type of blackout curtains. The fabric was an interwoven design called tonal basketweave fabric. It is made from 100% polyester fabric but looked like cotton. The color was called Anya Linen, a linen hue crossed between tan and gray. The curtain fabric felt heavy and looked like authentic sofa material, but way cheaper. Each box had 2 panels in them with the dimensions 37” x 84” each. They used innovative foam backing to the fabric and allows you to enjoy noise reducing and energy saving benefits within the camper. The back of the box states that they could be washed in the dryer when needed with no shrinkage.
