How to add additional storage to your tow hitch
I decided early on I didn’t want to use my batteries or dual gas tanks for camping. I knew I wasn’t going to boondock anytime soon, so I removed them and set them in storage for later. It gave me tons of room for storage I desperately needed. I didn’t like that this pop-up did have front storage like others I have had. In the past, I loved the convenience of storing my chocks, extra blocks, and rug in the front cargo area.
Once I removed the batteries and gas tanks, I had an area about 1.5 ft. by 4 ft long to work with. I had to be careful of the towing radius and the 2 holes needed to put up the bunk end. I had an extra plastic tub in the shop I wasn’t using and decided this was perfect. It was smaller than I needed giving me room to add more ideas later.
I started by measuring the frame of the trailer hitch previously made by the manufactures. I drilled 4 holes at the bottom of the tub to match the frame. I took 4 long zip ties and zip-tied the tub to the frame. That was it easy as pie. That baby wasn’t going anywhere. I added items in the tub and put the lid on.
For extra security, I added 2 holes to the top of the tub’s handles. Once drilled I put 2 lockable pins on each side. So, the lid didn’t come off during driving, and if someone tried to steal items they need the key to get in. This has freed up a lot of space in the cabin.
This was a completely free project, I had everything at the house and impervized with the tub size.
Here is another type of plastic tote you could add to your tow hitch for $26.98 from Walmart and it comes with an area to use a lock.
