What is Disney Fish Extender Program: Information
Fish extender program is a fantastic way to get more magic on your next Disney cruise. Disney cruisers in the know join a fish extender exchange group to add a bit of pixie dust to their vacation at sea or give to others.
The #1 Question I always get is, “Does Disney run or organize the group?” The answer is no; Disney does not take part in any of the fish extender programs but does allow the program on their ship.
Much like the “Hidden Ducks,” the Fish extender programs is completely up to guests and is not affiliated with Disney. So, if you didn’t sign up or don’t like your gifts, Disney has no part in the program.

Why are they called Fish Extenders?
To start this explanation of a fish extender is to explain why it is first called FE or Fish Extender. On the classic ships, the Magic and the Dream, located on the outside of the door was a little holder designed to hold your cabin information and notices. Disney designed them first to look like fish. (as seen above) But as the Disney Cruise Line grew the designs changed to reflect the theming of each corridor. Some current FE are now a seahorse, an owl, Cinderella’s royal carriage, Rapunzel’s sun symbol and much more to name a few.
What Is a Fish Extender Program?
A fish extender, or FE, is much like a Secret Santa-style activity popular on Disney cruises within smaller groups of cabins or families. Cabins will join a FE group, usually on Facebook, and will be set up in groups of 10 to 20. The size of the group will depend on the amount of people want to be in the program and how many people are in their cabin. Groups may limit size or set a monetary limit to keep the exchange affordable and logistically doable.
This is not the same as Pixie Dusting, which is usually a casual alternative where guests leave surprises without formal group where you don’t have to sign-up.

What is a Fish Extender?
An FE is a hanging fabric or plastic organizer placed on the decorative metal fish outside each stateroom. Fish extenders change them into hubs for informal gift exchanges during a cruise.
The hanging bags are typically personalized with names or Disney themes and feature multiple pockets, usually one for each person in the cabin. Note: only for that cabin, if you are traveling with our guests with different rooms, you must provide them with that information. This allows the people who are creating their gifts time to make enough and what location they must go to.
The Gifts?
Gift ideas range from homemade crafts like wood burning, to small items like door magnets, and even Disney gift cards. Honestly the list is endless, I suggest you try sites like Pinterest or Facebook to get suggestions and join the groups for even more ideas. Budgeting is very important as group sizes can vary. How to join?
You’ll first want to find the cruise you’re going on by searching for your ship and dates. For example, you might search “Disney Magic, May. 20-27, 2023,” and if a group already exists, ask to join if not you or someone who as been an on Disney cruise will make that group.
Within the groups (sometimes called roll calls), smaller groups can be created for fish extender exchanges are usually named after Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and so on. The groups are usually listed out by a group manager so you can see what your options are before committing to a themed group. This is where you can establish a budget for each cabin.
These can be established on a variety of themes, including family exchanges, adult exchanges, or even the type of gift you want to exchange, like door magnets, wood décor, or holiday ornaments. Depending on what type of gift exchange that is available for your cruise, you can register for one or more of the smaller groups.
You will usually be asked to fill out a brief survey about yourself and your cabin mates. For example: Each Guest’s…….
